within an organization. It involves selecting high-potential individuals and
providing them with mentorship and development opportunities to prepare them
for advancement into key leadership positions.
Essentially, succession planning addresses the inevitable
turnover of employees by proactively grooming successors capable of stepping
into crucial roles. It focuses on pivotal positions essential for
organizational competitiveness and longevity, such as executive leadership
roles.

- Ensuring Continuity: The ultimate goal of succession planning is to maintain operational continuity by ensuring that qualified individuals are ready to assume critical roles when vacancies arise.
Link Between L&D and Talent Development/Succession Planning
The foundation of effective talent development and
succession planning often lies in robust L&D initiatives. Training, defined
as planned activities to enhance job knowledge and skills, represents the
initial phase of L&D (Henderson, 2017). Learning, on the other hand,
denotes the individual's acquisition of knowledge and skills through

diverse learning methodologies. From action learning to e-learning,
organizations deploy a spectrum of methods to foster knowledge acquisition and
skill enhancement among employees, thereby laying the groundwork for talent
development and succession planning.
To effectively combine and manage succession planning with training and development, consider the following steps:
- Identify Potential Employees: Focus resources on high-potential employees who demonstrate the greatest capacity for future leadership roles.
- Recognize Gaps: Analyze organizational and skill gaps by creating profiles for key positions, identifying areas for improvement, and aligning training programs accordingly.

Leveraging tools like competency frameworks and performance evaluations, organizations discern HiPos, nurturing their growth through targeted development programs. By providing challenging assignments, mentorship opportunities, and exposure to diverse experiences, organizations groom HiPos for leadership positions, ensuring a seamless transition in the face of succession (Armstrong, 2011).
